For those individuals who count grams of protein I found using the app My Fitness Pal to be the easiest and most convenient and free app (they have a paid version, but we have never used it because free works just as well for our purposes).
I was introduced to this app many years ago by my daughter’s dietitian when we moved to the simplified diet. At the time she told me it was an easy way to look up grams of protein, as well as to save it. The best part was that I could then send this information to her which was so helpful. No more pieces of paper, copying and sending in either via snail mail or email.
One of the features I am coming to really love about this app is that you can favorite items and put them in the “My Foods” section for easier reference. For example, I put my daughter’s formula in this section so when I need to input what she had I simply go there and click on it to add it to her day.
Another feature I love is the recipe section. You can input the ingredients of a recipe in there, and it will calculate everything out for you. If you save it then later you can easily reference it the next time you make that recipe.
This app is super easy, and even easy enough for my daughter to use on her own. She started using this app at about 10 yrs old. At the time we gave her an old iphone that we had that no longer had phone service on it. We simply hooked it up to our wifi, and she was easily able to look up and record foods all on her own.
Unfortunately this app won’t work for individuals that are still counting phes or exchanges, but for those of us using grams of protein it is very useful. The best part is that there are so many foods in there. I honestly haven’t found one item that I was looking for that wasn’t in there. Everything seems to be listed.

This app has been a lifesaver for me on my maternal PKU journey. My levels were 8-10 pre-pregnancy. Once I started tracking on this app, I easily saw my mistakes. I'm happy to say my whole pregnancy has been in the 2-5 range!!
ReplyDeleteThat is great to hear. We absolutely love it too. It has been so beneficial to our 12 yr old because she always has her phone with her!
